An Impressive Evolution
Horace Wales came to Canada, and Richmond, from the United States. A number of young men came from the British Isles about the same time to make their fortune in the new world. They weren’t all successful; they often worked for “bed and baccy” (tobacco). As they grew old with no one to take care of them they became lost. Mr. Wales left instructions in his will to build a Home for the elderly, protestant, men living in the Eastern Townships. Wales Home News April 2011

By: Rebecca Taylor

April has come and gone, hard to believe that we are already this far into 2011. April was a great month at the Wales Home, it had some exciting feature events. I am happy to be able to share a summary of them with you. For a time, Easter decorations of bunnies, eggs and the like could be seen throughout the Home. For a complete listing of activities, please visit the website at www.waleshome.ca.

Happy birthday to everyone who celebrated in April. Special birthday wishes to Aline Pierce who turned 100 on the 18th. A birthday party was held in the living room on the morning of the 18th in Aline’s honour. The monthly birthday party was held on the 20th in the 4th floor rec. room and was hosted by Danville’s St. Augustine’s Church.

Residents enjoyed a toe tapping good time at the dance in the main dining room on April 2nd. Donna and Sidney Mills provided the much-enjoyed entertainment. On the 4th, the month’s feature movie Easter Parade was shown on the big screen in the living room. “Les Coccinelles en Folie” hosted a chocolate sale in the living room on the 5th. Sandra Lester and Audrey Gunter hosted an Easter craft in the living room on the afternoon of the 7th. Residents of the Manning and Shaw wings had the opportunity to partake in a baking activity (cream cheese cranberry muffins) on the morning of the 11th. On the 12th, residents and drivers headed to the Chinese buffet in Drummondville for a lunch outing. The Late Bloomers provided entertainment for a dance in the dining room on the 15th. The Roxton Singers came on the evening of the 25th to entertain residents. The last painting session of this season was held on the 28th. The Wales Home had a table at the craft fair on April 30th and May 1st at the Richmond arena.

The Wales Home’s volunteer appreciation evening was held on the 11th of April. Thank you to our over two hundred volunteers who take time out of their schedules for various activities year round, to help make the lives of the residents, employees, family members and friends better each and every day. Whether you are working behind the scenes or in a visible roll, your work is important to so many. Never take yourselves fore granted, you are doing incredible work.

Sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of Conrad Bailey, Frederick Currier and Ora Loomis. Welcome to Norma Knowles.

There are still some Wales Home cookbooks left. If anyone is interested in purchasing one, the cost is $20.00 if you come and pick it up at the Home, or $30.00 if it is mailed to you. WHAT A CATCH!fishing_1.jpg

The Wales Home’s own pond is a beautiful, natural area enjoyed tremendously by the Staff and resident’s alike. The annual fishing derbies are a wonderful chance for residents, staff, and volunteers to enjoy some fresh air while taking part in an exciting fishing experience. The Wales Home Pond is stalked with speckled trout yearly. Our first fishing derby of the season will be held on June 14, to celebrate Father’s Day, followed by a barbeque in honour of all fathers.
