Alzheimer Nursing Home and Alzheimer Care Unit

The Wales Home has a 29-bed Alzheimer’s care unit / dementia unit on Norton 2. This Alzheimer's nursing unit of the Wales Home caters to the special needs of those suffering from dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. Personnel working on this unit have received training in order to better understand the individual needs of this type of clientele. The daily routines are adapted to better respond to the needs of the residents living on this unit. Activities on the Alzheimer’s care unit are designed to stimulate residents, cognitively, physically, socially, and psychologically. Daily routines and exercises are geared to meet the needs of these individuals: small frequent meals, bathing needs and exercise, i.e. walking outside or small group activities. We change and adapt activities to accommodate the residents living in this special care unit in addition to highlighting various themes and holidays throughout the year.

Residents on the Alzheimer’s care Unit have:

24 hour nursing care
Fully furnished room (including a hospital bed, bedding, towels and facecloths)
Drawers and closet space built into the rooms
Emergency call bell system
Semi-private bathrooms
Whirlpool bath given by nursing staff
Large sunny solarium as a dining and recreation area
Coded door locks to prevent wanderers from leaving
